Candidate Biography

From candidate Website

Ben Olson was raised and educated in Wisconsin Dells and began working in the tourism industry at the age of 12. Ben spent many years as a river pilot and guide on the Wisconsin River. Growing up in a staunch Republican family (his Uncle Jack served as Wisconsin's Lt. Governor) he was taught that only the Republican party supported the business community and free enterprise. During college, the GOP's stand on questionable foreign interventions and occupations, as well as their failure to support the basic liberties protected by the Bill of Rights forced Ben to look elsewhere for a political home. The consistent, logical platform of the newly emerging Libertarian Party was the answer to questions of "What is the true role of government in our lives?" and "How can we ensure that our liberty is preserved and not traded away for a promise of security?"
Ben's life has seen much travel and a number of trades, including running a ski school, doing golf club demos for Wilson Staff, bartending, landscaping, greenskeeping  and truck driving. In recent years he settled into building conventional and log homes. Since the downturn in the building industry, he has spent more time running his sawmill and playing his guitar at clubs on weekends.
In 1998 Ben married his lovely wife Holly and they have 3 children. Christina, 20, Madison, 16, and Erik 12. They live on an 80 acre farm in Dellona Township in Sauk County, just west of Wisconsin Dells.  Given an opportunity to relax, Ben enjoys listening to some good live music, cross country skiing or floating down a river in his kayak.
