I grew up in a large, middle-class Midwestern family with two selfless parents and four younger brothers. I always understood the value of the dollar because my parents had to make every dollar stretch to support our large crew.
My wife, Laurie, and I have lived in Wauwatosa since we were first married nearly four years ago. We met in college at a College Republicans meeting, where I explained to a receptive and curious freshman the virtues of conservatism. I guess it was a coherent explanation because she kept coming back to meetings and events. After college, I decided to pursue additional education. However, I knew that I wanted to stay in the Midwest, where people valued hard work and family, as I did. Ultimately, that led me to Marquette University Law and Graduate School. Two years later, Laurie also chose to pursue a post-graduate degree at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Wauwatosa. She is in her fourth year of work towards her Ph.D. in Microbiology.
In February 2010, I was completing my Master’s in Political Science at Marquette. Scott Walker was running for Governor, and I had been impressed with his conservative leadership in Milwaukee. So, I joined the campaign as a volunteer intern. Late in the summer, I took over the Wauwatosa volunteer center for the campaign. After winning the election, I was asked if I had a desire to work for the Governor in Madison. I accepted the job offer because I wanted to help the Governor take the conservative movement to Madison.
As the Governor’s Assistant Legal Counsel, I focused on reducing government regulation. I ran the Office of Regulatory Compliance for the last six months of my tenure in the Governor’s Office, providing oversight to the administrative rules process. I also recently helped re-establish the Small Business Regulatory Review Board, so small business owners can help identify the rules that are oppressing their ability to grow and add jobs.
