Candidate Biography

From candidate Website

Sean was born and raised in rural Wisconsin and has never strayed far from his roots. Wisconsin’s storied lumber history runs through his veins. His great, great grandfather was one of the state’s early pioneers and a laborer for the Northwestern Lumber Company. His great grandfather, one of the city of Hayward’s founding settlers, was a sawyer for 27 years.

During his short time in Congress, Sean has proven himself to be one of the most transparent and accessible members to ever represent Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District. Since his election in 2010, he’s held more than 50 public town-hall style meetings in all 20 counties of the District and traveled regularly to community parades, fairs and dairy breakfasts. Understanding the geographical challenges posed by representing one of the largest districts east of the Mississippi River, Sean introduced a mobile constituent office to bring invaluable congressional services to everyone while also saving valuable taxpayer dollars by eliminating the need for a third or fourth full-time office.

And Sean has kept his promise to fight every day to reform Washington. His first act as a newly sworn-in member was to introduce a ban on wasteful earmarks. Sean also led the effort to freeze congressional pay, cut congressional budgets and eliminate wasteful government spending. Sean’s legislation, the RESTRICT Act, was the basis for a new law that finally outlawed insider tradingpractices among government officials and employees. And he’s one of the few members of his caucus to have introduced a replacement to health care reform that would actually lower costs and make health care more affordable. Sean’s legislative focus has been on creating new jobs, growing the economy by eliminating onerous regulations on small businesses, protecting Medicare, and reducing the nation’s long-term debts and deficits. And from his seat on the powerful House Financial Services Committee, Sean has defended the interests of small community banks and held top leaders in banking, industry and government responsible for, time and again, making American taxpayers pay for the mistakes of the Too Big to Fail banks.

Lumberjacking is in his family’s blood. Sean was a nationally recognized professional lumberjack athlete, a world champion in the speed climb and an accomplished log-roller. In fact, sean worked his way through law achool by performing in lumberjack shows and exhibitions across the state of Wisconsin and around the country. After graduating from law school he practiced law for two years in Hayward before becoming a special prosecutor in Ashland, Wisconsin.

Shortly thereafter, Sean became the acting assistant D.A, and later the District Attorney of Ashland County. He is most proud of his dedication to prosecuting child sex crimes. Working together with law enforcement, Sean helped make Ashland County one of the first counties in the state to investigate and prosecute child Internet sex crimes.

Sean and his wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy, are the parents of six children – 12 year old Evita, 10 year old Jack, 8 year old Lucia-Belen, 5 year old John-Paul, 4 year old Paloma, and MariaVictoria, now 2 years old. Not surprisingly, as soon as Sean’s kids learn to walk, he teaches them how to logroll and carry on the family tradition. The Duffy kids are growing up the way Sean did, surrounded by the idyllic beauty and solid values of northwestern Wisconsin.
