Jim Sensenbrenner was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1943, and shortly thereafter moved to Shorewood, Wisconsin with his family. There, he attended the Milwaukee Country Day School, and went on to Stanford University for his undergraduate degree, and the University of Wisconsin – Madison for law school. Jim got his start in politics when he was first elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1968. In 1975, he won a special election for the Wisconsin state Senate, and in 1978, he was elected to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives.
During his time in Congress, Jim has served as chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology (1997-2001), and chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary (2001-2007). Currently, he serves on the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and on the Committee on the Judiciary, where he is chairman of the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Oversight.
Jim’s many legislative achievements while House Judiciary Committee Chairman include the USA Patriot Act, the REAL ID Act, and an extension of the Voting Rights Act. In 1998, he served as a House floor manager in the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton. More recently, he authored the USA Freedom Act, and worked across the aisle to pass the Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Reduction Act, and the Due Process Act.
Jim is widely known for his strong conservative values, his way of telling it like it is, and his accessibility -- he averages over 100 in-person town meetings a year in his district. His pro-life, limited-government and anti-tax voting record regularly ranks him among the most conservative members of Congress.
In his free time, Jim enjoys reading, collecting stamps, tending to his three rescue dogs, and watching Wisconsin sports teams, especially the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers. He has been married to Cheryl Warren Sensenbrenner since 1977. Together, they have two adult sons, Frank and his wife, Margaret, and Bob and his wife, Diana, and a 1-year-old grandson, Kevin.
